Monday, October 31st

6th Grade Language Arts

  • Today, we completed Grammar Lesson 13 –> Practice a-j on page 59. Lesson Review 13 #’s 1-14 on page 60.
  • Vocabulary Lesson 5 Test Corrections are due on Friday.  Students should complete their corrections on a piece of loose leaf.  In order to earn points back, students should explain the reason their new answer is correct.
  • Grammar Review over lessons 13-15 will be due next Monday, November 7th.

We are currently working on our one pagers and writing about literary elements in The Westing Game.

  • Read for 20 minutes and complete your reading record.  The reading record needs to be signed on Thursday night. 
  • Attached to the reading record is the article, Remember When America Banned Sliced Bread.  Students should read and answer the questions that go along with it.  I am encouraging them to look for keywords in the questions,  refer back to the text, and underline where they find the answers.  
  • We are in our second week of book clubs. This week we are focusing on characterization and character conflict.  If students do not finish their book club pages during class, they may use their book club books towards their twenty minutes of reading outside of school.

7th Grade Language Arts

We started our next writing piece,  The Danger of a Single Story.  Students  used examples from Freak the Mighty to help them make connections and brainstorm for their own writing. Within this writing piece we will focus on creating a thesis statement and incorporating quotations in writing.

  • We are completing lessons 11 and 12 this week in grammar.  The Grammar Review will be due on Monday, October 24th.  
  • Memoir Writing- Students are typing their memoirs.  They are going to work on editing and revision strategies before submitting their final pieces.

  • We will finish The Westing Game this week and start book clubs next week. 
  • We will have a test over inferences and context clues next Tuesday.

There are two short nonfiction articles attached to the reading log this week.  There are four multiple choice questions that go along with each article.  Please check that your child is completing their reading, prompts, and articles. Also, encourage them to take AR quizzes at home after they finish reading books.
  • We will be finishing up The Westing Game this week!  We have been talking about “lightbulb moments” as we are getting closer to figuring out the mystery.

Grammar Review- Due on Monday, October 10th

This week, in class, we will complete Lessons 6, 7, and 8 from the Grammar and Writing book. The Grammar Review covers the skills practiced in these lessons.

Vocabulary- Corrections for the Unit 3 Test will be due this Friday. In order to receive points back for corrections, students should write a brief explanation as to why their new answer is correct and attach it to their original test.

Reading- Please read for 20 minutes each night and fill out your Reading Record. Remember to get your Reading Records signed each Thursday night. I also attached two, short nonfiction articles to the Reading Record this week to get more practice with informational text.

AR- Please remember to take AR quizzes on the books you read. Some students showed no gains at all in their September points.
